Researchers Find Brain Center of Music Appreciation

December 13, 2002 — Sounds from the radio slip into a melody and suddenly your mind skips back to an evening of moonlight and romance and happy times. It happens to everybody, but until now science was unsure just why.

A new study by researchers at Dartmouth College in Hanover, Mew Hampshire, suggests that recalling that melody is the job of a part of the brain known as the rostromedial prefrontal cortex. It is the part that remembers music and is even able to recognize a sour note in the midst of a familiar tune.

Dark Dwarf Galaxy Gets Even Darker

December 21, 2001 — In the Draco dwarf spheroidal, a smudge of stars about 250,000 light-years away, astronomers have found the first compelling evidence that the dark matter around a dwarf galaxy sprawls deep into space, creating an extended halo similar to what is thought to shroud all bigger galaxies. Further studies of this cocoon, whose composition remains a mystery, promise to illuminate the early history of our own galaxy, which presumably acquired its heft by eating such dark-matter snacks.

Genomes Take off

December 21, 2001 — Barely 3 years ago, researchers were edging hesitantly to the starting gate in the race to sequence the human genome. But egged on by competition, a private effort and an international public consortium galloped into the home stretch early this year, achieving the first publications of draft coverage of the 3.3 billion bases that define our species. The drafts cover the gene-containing portions of our DNA but have gaps of varying sizes. The big surprise when the drafts were revealed: Our genetic code contains only about 35,000 genes, not even twice as many as the lowly worm Caenorhabditis elegans.
