Madeliene wanted me a new Disco Doll for her birthday. Besides she would like the doll to wear a leather jacket and a miniskirt. She also wanted the doll to be called Bryony. “I’ve got the whole set, apart from this one,” she told me,” and “I really need Bryony.” I asked her why she needed so many dolls and told her that when I had been young I had just had one baby doll and one teddy bear and that I had played with bricks, and paper, and pencils. She said she would hate to live like that. All her friends had the whole set of dolls and she was the only one who didn’t. She said she always got everything last. I tried to persuade her that there were more important things in life than being the same as everyone else. “I’d like you to grow up understanding the real value of money, and to value the individual,” I told her. “I don’t want to be different and wondeful in my own way, I want a new Disco Doll!” she shouted. Then I got cross (разозлиться). “You won’t force me to buy you one. I prefer to get you something that will teach you something. Those dolls only teach you to be obsessed with clothes and make-up.”

“Well, then I want you to give me money so I can learn about the value of money, and then I can choose what I buy for myself,” she said.
