1. Study Christmas vocabulary below; find Russian equivalents to these words or expressions, if any:

carol - a joyful song, especially a religious song sung at Christmas

chimney – a passage, often made of brick or metal, through which smoke escapes from a fire or a furnace

Christingle - is a symbolic object used in Advent services in many Christian churches. The Christingle consists of:

- an orange representing the world with

- a red ribbon around it representing the blood of Jesus;

- fruits and sweets are skewered on 4 cocktail sticks which are pushed into the orange representing the fruits of the earth and the four seasons;

- and a lighted candle is pushed into the centre of the orange representing Christ, the light of the world.

eggnog - a drink made from beaten eggs, milk, sugar, and nutmeg, and sometimes alcohol (especially rum), which is drunk at Christmas

Eve - the evening before Christmas

fruit cake - a cake containing small pieces of dried fruit, nuts, etc.

mantelpiece - a shelf over a fireplace

mistletoe - an evergreen plant with small white berries which is hung indoors as a Christmas decoration

ornament - a decoration, such as an object hung on a Christmas tree

Sunday of Advent - the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day

sprig - a small thin branch, with a few leaves, which grows from a larger branch on a shrub or a tree

(to) suspend - to hang something up, e.g." The lamp was suspended from the ceiling."

Twelfth night - the evening of Epiphany, or the twelfth day after Christmas, observed as a festival by various churches

wreath - an arrangement of evergreen trees needles (i.e. leaves) twisted or woven into a circle
