My speciality

I am a second year student of the Pipeline Transportation department (faculty) of the Ufa State Petroleum Technological University. Students entering our faculty may specialize in the following branches:

I. Designing and exploitation of oil and gas pipelines, oil and gas storages and bulk plants.

II. Construction of oil and gas pipelines, oil and gas storages and bulk plants.

III. Power engineering, heat engineering systems, maintenance of power plants and distribution facilities.

IV. Designing and exploitation of gas pipelines, gas storages, compressor stations and apparatus.

The first two years of studies are aimed at providing general education, comprising humanities, social sciences, applied and natural sciences. The next three years are devoted almost entirely to the major discipline. Students have practical classes in experimental laboratories and workshops of the University.

Beginning with the second year many students begin independent research work at students’ scientific societies and specialized chairs.

Every summer students have field training. They go to oil and gas pipelines, to construction sites, to compressor stations, to pumping stations, to power plants and oil refineries where they collect material for their term-papers and graduation designs.

Oil and gas industries are the backbone of modern energy production and technological progress in general. Every year the amount of extracted oil and accompanying gas increases therefore the task of oil and gas transportation and storage is urgent. This embraces many problems such as mechanization and automation of construction of gas and oil mains, tanks, storages, compressor plants and pumping units, and the development of new methods of welding metallic structures and combating corrosion.

Pipeline systems for the transportation of crude oil and refined products and natural gas are highly organized and developed in our country. In order to handle more oil at less cost large diameter (1420 mm - the world’s largest) were introduced. Most of today’s large diameter pipelines are built utilizing the latest specialized equipment.

Great hopes are being put on the equipment and technology intended for work in the extreme condition of the Far North, such as rotor excavators, capable of “gnawing” into permafrost, and pipelayers that can hold on their boom a weight of up to 80 tons, and combines for cleaning pipes before insulation, and special cross-marsh vehicles, and hovercraft for carrying heavy cargo.

Power engineering is a very important branch of national economy. Oil and gas, coal and falling water are the most important sources of heat and energy necessary for all the branches of economy, for the rapid development of science and engineering in our country.

Our scientists and inventors have developed many new types of turbines, heat exchangers and other devices and have modernized existing facilities to increase production efficiency.

The next stage in the development of power engineering will be the introduction of new raw energy sources which surround us every day and are freely available, non-polluting and renewable such as sun, wind, ocean waves and others. Future energy planners will combine a range of supply, storage and back-up technologies into an integrated system that will provide reliable renewable energy at all times and in all seasons.

The country needs highly-skilled specialists to work in various spheres of oil and gas industry, and power engineering and all the students should study hard to become such specialists. They must know all the latest achievements of science and technology to find easy and cheap methods of transporting and storing oil and gas, generating electricity and harnessing the energy of the sun, atom and other sources.
